How To Treat Gout At Home.

How To Treat Gout.

Anyone who has experienced gout will be fully aware of the excruciating pain, it is known that gout is caused by an excessive amount of uric acid in the bloodstream, this build up is caused by either an overproduction of uric acid or by the inability of the kidneys to remove and excrete sufficient amounts of uric acid.

This excess build up of uric acid in the bloodstream then crystallizes and collects in, around and between the joints, usually the joint of the big toe, but it can attack literally any joint in the body, there have been many theories about what causes this excess build up of uric acid, but no one has ever come up with a single conclusive answer.

Unfortunately there has been a steady increase in the reported cases of gout recently with over 6 million instances of gout in America alone, however, even though these painful attacks of gout are on the increase the good news is there are effective medications, treatments and products that may prevent or even stop gout.

What Causes Gout.

Though there have been many various theories as to what causes excessive amounts of uric acid, the main cause is thought to be due to the diet and the way our bodies break down and metabolize the food, it is this that causes the buildup of uric acid, some people build up excessive amounts during this process, while others don’t remove enough via the kidneys, in a young healthy person, the uric acid is removed from the bloodstream by the kidneys and if flushed out in the urine.

Early signs of the gout.

Early signs of gout can be a slightly uncomfortable feeling in a joint, typically the big toe, however this usually happens directly before the sudden painful onset of full blown gout, which almost always occurs at night while lying down in bed, it is thought that the inactivity while resting allows the uric acid to build up in the joint and become crystallized.

The initial first attack of gout will clear by itself and the joint will return to normal within a week or so, even without the need of any treatment, all the swelling and discomfort will go away, however the gout often returns after a period of time of a few weeks of months, over time these gout attacks may become more frequent and even more painful, so it is quite important to take steps to try to avoid the onset of gout.

What is gout medication.

Anyone that suffers from gout should seek medical advice, your doctor can prescribe various medications that can help or even prevent the onset of gout, however, during a severe gout flare-up it may be quite difficult to get yourself to the doctors surgery, although it is strongly advised that you consult your doctor before taking medication, there are some over the counter medications you can buy online, I will include some here in this post.

What is gout diagnosis.

Your doctor will diagnose gout by taking fluid directly from the affected joint, this method is to see if there are gout crystals present, occasionally calcium pyrophosphate crystals may be present, which is a different form of gout, however, the most common procedure is a blood test, whereby levels of uric acid and kidney function can be examined, the blood test is usually done after and not during the gout flare-up, due to the fact that the reading may not be quite as accurate.

Home remedies for the gout.

Keep the affected joint elevated if possible, drink plenty of fluids to help with the flushing out of excess uric acid, putting an ice pack on the joint may help to reduce swelling and relieve the pain, drink cherry juice, it is a well known fact that cherries help to eliminate uric acid from the blood, avoid eating red meat, yeast, fish or any other foods that have a high purine level.

What is the best gout medication.

There are different types of gout medication, some are anti-inflammatory, some are for pain relief and some to prevent recurring attacks, here I will add a list of the various gout medications.

Nonsteroidal anti inflammatory tablets.

Indomethacin.

Ibuprofen.

Naproxen.

These medications are effective anti-inflammatories which can be lowered in dosage has the swelling and redness disappears, inform your doctor if you have any side effects when taking these or any other type of medication.

Colchicine.

This medication can be used to treat an existing gout attack or to stop a gout attack occurring, colchicine can be taken immediately as the gout attack occurs, then at regular intervals after, though colchicine is an effective medication for gout, it does not stop the build up of uric acid in the blood.

Corticosteroids.

Prednisone is a corticosteroid it is given when the doctor feels it is a better choice than anti-inflammatory drugs, high doses of prednisone is given initially, it is then lowered and tapered off over a space of two weeks, these are prescription drugs and can’t be bought over the counter and it is important to follow the doctors advice.

Probenecid.

Probenecid helps the body to flush out excess uric acid, patients are advised to drink at least 5 pints of fluid during the day while taking probenecid to avoid the formation of kidney stones, inform your doctor if you are taking any other medication as it may interact with probenecid.

Allopurinol.

Allopurinol is a medication that decreases the amount of uric acid from building up in the bloodstream, inform your doctor if you are taking any other form of medication also inform your doctor of any past kidney problems if any.

Febuxostat.

Febuxostat was developed specifically for the treatment of gout, it is very effective at decreasing the buildup of uric acid.

The ultimate Gout Diet & Cookbook.

What diet for gout.

Diet has always been blamed for gout, most of us have heard the old saying about gout being a rich man’s disease, well, I certainly don’t think it’s a rich man’s disease, I personally think it has more to do with liver function, however, I do believe that diet does play a part, in fact, it was during the mid 19th Century, a time which saw a sudden increase in the availability of refined, granulated sugar that “coincidentally” there was also a sudden increase in the cases of gout. see here.

Healthy diet and gout.

Medical experts say that the diet plays a big part in the build up of uric acid levels, many of the gout diet guidelines give suggestions on food that we shouldn’t eat, for instance foods that are high in purines, such as anchovies, sardines, herring, mussels, scallops, shellfish and some other seafood, meat such as bacon, turkey, veal, venison, liver and other organ meats.

For this post, I’ve made a list of some of the foods that are low in purines, so we can eat more of these foods and less of the foods listed above.

Vegetables, Eat more vegetables because the high content of vitamins and minerals helps to counter the effects of any high purine or gout triggering foods that you may have eaten.

Dairy products, Low fat dairy products may lower the levels of uric acid by improving the bodies ability to excrete the excess uric acid through the urine, this may be due to the high protein, low purine levels.

Water, It is very important for gout sufferers to drink lots of water, research has shown that adequate water consumption reduces the risk of gout attacks, this is due to the fact that the excess uric acid gets flushed out of the system.

Cherries, Many studies have shown that cherries are beneficial for gout sufferers, people who eat cherries or drink sherry juice are up to 50% less likely to experience a gout attack.

Coffee, Studies have shown that drinking coffee reduces the risk of gout, people that drink 5 cups of coffee per day have a 40%  lower risk of having a gout attack, the coffee has an effect of lowering uric acid levels, tea on the other hand has no noticeable effect. see here.

Does garlic affect gout.

Garlic is beneficial for a wide range of conditions which may be due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties but is garlic a good choice when it comes to controlling gout, well, there are some proponents that say garlic helps in the treatment of arthritis and gout, however, there is no real scientific evidence to support these claims.

The reason some people suggest that garlic is good for gout is due to the fact that garlic contains a compound called allicin which protects garlic from insects and various fungi, when we eat garlic it is claimed that the allicin from the garlic causes the liver to flush out toxins, thus cleansing the liver which in turn aids the liver to remove the uric acid.

However, studies have shown that the liver is actually flushing out the allicin which the livers natural response to what is the garlic’s protective antibacterial compound, the liver actually treats the allicin as a toxin, so therefore the liver tries to get rid of it, in fact, according to the studies, the liver is less efficient at flushing out the uric acid while it is busy flushing out the allicin, so therefore garlic could actually be bad for gout sufferers.

Wishing you all a Healthy, Wealthy and Happy Future.

  1. Thank you very much for this article. I had kidney stones within the last year and when I was researching remedies for kidney stones a lot of stuff came up about remedies for gout. I think that’s because the acidity you mentioned can be a part of both of them. Like you said I have to avoid purines. This is a great article and I hope more people find it when they are searching for gout remedies.

    • Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment Jen, yes kidney stones and gout are linked, and both are very painful conditions, I hope you’re no longer having trouble with kidney stones, I’m pleased you found my post helpful, take care.

  2. I like your site concept. I tell myself as an affirmation that I am happy healthy & wealthy, so that is cool. I have had friends who got gout. I like all the healing options you have. I was wondering if it could be massaged out, or would that be too painful?

I also like how you addressed medical & natural treatments. I ALWAYS go natural unless I absolutely am in so much pain I’ll give pills or whatever liquid remedy is said to help. Speaking of liquid remedy:

You may want to add a part where alcohol is a contributing factor to causing gout. I have known at least 3 people who suffered it after excessive drinking. So maybe look into that and see the relation and write that in there because some experience on their people have had to go through this and it was alcohol related on top of whatever genetics or other contributing factors. But good job and good luck with your site!

    • Thank you for your comment Mark, I have had gout in the past and I can absolutely assure you, it would be impossible to massage gout, it really is excruciatingly painful, thank you for pointing out the connection with gout and alcohol, I maybe should have made a point about it, however, one of the links I added does explain everything about what is the best diet for gout and it also fully explains the link with alcohol and gout, thanks again for your comment, take care.

  3. Timely article Russ,

Gout is not a surprise to anyone anymore I guess because so many people have it, even my uncle and my granda and honestly as much as I want to help them, I have no clue how it started and what treatment should I help them with besides the medication their taking.

I am however, determined to maybe ease their pain and raise their spirits by making delicious meals with your suggested ingredients, do you think that would be a good idea? I could make vegetable chowder and mocktails with cherries 😀

    • Thank you for your comment Riaz, I’m sorry to hear about your family members suffering with gout, they have my sympathy, yes I would definitely recommend making some gout friendly meals, that would be a very nice gesture, I would especially recommend the cherries, they are very good when it comes to treating gout. thanks again for your comment.

  4. Hi Russ,

Thank you for sharing such detailed information on the condition itself as well as its possible treatment and prevention.  I found your article very informative.

I’ve never suffered from gout personally, but I’ve known at least two persons in my close circle who have.  I had heard that certain foods were causing gout.  Working in the food and wine industry, I just assumed that too many animal protein rich meals were to blame, without exactly understanding the actual chemistry.  Of course, it’s not as simple as that, as you explain.

You don’t mention exercising. Would that be part of a good preventive regimen?

    Vincent

    • Hi Vincent, I’m glad you found this article interesting and informative and you’re lucky if you’ve never had gout it really is a painful condition, the exact cause of gout isn’t really known, there are probably quite a few contributory factors, I would think exercise is always advisable however where gout is concerned I would recommend moderate exercise, I don’t think vigorous, excessive exercise would be beneficial, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.

  5. Glad to see a review on Solaray total uric acid cleanse, I experienced a very terrible flare-up with gout. A friend of mine said, “Trust me Jordan, try….what have you got to lose…my gout was so painful I couldn’t walk Total Cleanse really did the magic”. I was willing to try anything at that time, Solaray Total Cleanse (Uric Acid) has been my daily ritual ever since (talking about 3 months and a half), and I haven’t had a flare up since going on the capsule (two a day)… and let me tell you – – I will NOT go off of it either. Certainly works for me – Sammy my friend was correct. I will try and follow the healthy diet tips also.

    Regards!
